Humans have to remember to run the script, be trained what to look for, etc.
etc.... why not automate it completely, and have the computer tell you when
it's ailing?

I understand what you are saying, but this is a somewhat political situation.
The folks who handle SMS (This is a large organization where the IT groups
are highly compartimentalized) believe that they are very accurate and the
SMS Clients work all the time. We, Desk Side Support, get tickets all the
time from our helpdesk requesting us to eg: install software because they
were unable to push the software via SMS. During our subsequent install we
investigate why the SMS client is not functioning and it's usually a
reinstallation of a non-functioning clent. What I am looking for is an
automated process where my technicians can verify functionallity on any
machine they touch. That is what my question is. Is there a tool r script
that can be run locally to perform this verification?

In that article, you can "...enable logging for bad clients..." within the
script. Just go grab it from dudeworks.com, edit it, and try it out.
