I installed MS SQL server to our excisting SBS2K server. Performance became
poor as MS Sql takes all available resources.
To get some proxy server performance, I had to tune down on SQL memory
settings.

Is there a SBS2k tool or KB document to get some optimization ?

It is probably best to move the SQL server to it's own server. Is this
possible under the SBSK license and installation program?

TIA,

Fred

SQL is a memory hog (as is Exchange) and if you really need to make heavy
use of SQL, you should have it on a dedicated server. But you'll need
another license for Windows Server and a non-SBS copy of SQL & license(s)
for same.....

What are the hardware specs on the existing box?

Did you use the SBS integrated setup, or run SQL setup directly from
CD2/3 ?

Not that I know of, but SQL Server manages memory dynamically, and
should only request what it needs, and as load decreases, return memory
to the OS.

No, the SQL Server included with SBS2000 and SBS2003, Premium Edition
has to be installed on the SBS, or not at all.

If you're making significant use of SQL as well as Exchange, I would
recommend a minimum of 2Gb RAM in the SBS.

I used the SBS intgerated setup. If MsSql server uses the configured memory
dynamically, it doesn't do a good job at that. At start up it doesn't fully
take the maximum configured memory, however if a request is send it goes to
maximum and will never come down again. Even if there isn't any connection
or request anymore.

We have 1Gb of memory. Allocated to MsSql is a maximum of 200MB. Still
Msproxy and internet access will come to a grinding halt if MsSql server
runs. Stopping the service takes ages. Most of the time I end it manually to
get things going again.

I will try installing another 1GB of memory.

Thanks,

Fred
