Hi

It seems we are running out of capacity on our DAT (DDS4) tape drive. We are
now thinking of moving to the DLT standard. Are our existing DAT backups
readable on DLT drives in case we need to restore anything?

Thanks

Nope - totally different physical tape.

I am looking at dell site (we have a PE 2600). They only provide AIT after
DDS. Is AIT the same as DLT?

Thanks

No again - AIT, DAT and DLT are all different.

I just ran into the exact same situation - DDS4 drive too small on PE2600.
After doing a ton of research, I ended up with an Exabyte VXA2 drive.  I've
been running it with no complaint for about 2 months now.  I got an external
and left the DDS drive installed - I can still use it to restore an old tape
or whatever, although I doubt it'll see much use now.

I was looking for 80GB native capacity.  What I did was to compare the total
cost of a drive, scsi cables, and 15 tapes.  AIT impressed me, but it was
off the chart price-wise.  DLT is proven technology and highly recommended,
but Dell's pricing was out of line.  If I'd chosen DLT, I would have had to
buy a different brand, which is OK - just don't judge backup drive pricing
by what they charge at Dell.

The Exabyte tapes are expensive, but the drive itself was only about $1200.
Although I didn't shop DLT very hard, the Exabyte was cheapest of the
options I looked at.  More importantly, Jeff Middleton has Exabyte deployed
at a large number of clients, and has found it reliable over a period of a
couple of years.  So far, I'm not sorry with that choice (an added benefit -
my backups run in about half the time of DDS).

I've upgraded a few clients from DDS to AIT-2, and so far have been quite
impressed.  For me AIT was substantially cheaper than DLT, Ultrium, etc.
and VXA2 not viable in this market.

We ended up with a Quantum DLT drive on somes servers. 80 GB uncompressed,
160
GB compressed. About 100GB on average. Tapes are around $80.00. Tape drive
is expensive at $1800.00. But this drive is fast, needless to say. Have used
the Exabyte VX1, 36GB uncompressed, drives and they work very well albeit
slower than this Quantum DLT.

DLT rocks!  most of my clients are on 80/160, some on 40/80 and cheaper than
Ultrium.  AIT is not as fast as DLT and about the same price.  Since DLT has
been around since dirt with native support I am partial to it.  I pay about
$51 for 80/160 tapes and $1800 for the internal drive.  Standardize on one
or the other though.

Mark, $51.00 for 80/160 tape? Great price.  I have been buying from
www.cdw.com at $61.00 a tape, lately. Where else is a good source to buy? I
just looked at www.cdw.com and the same internal tape drive I bought s
little while ago is now down to $1299.39. Good backup performer.
