Hi,

I have done some reading through this NG on this subject and have
realised I have incorrectly set-up our SBS2000 installation, in that
the domain name of the server is the same as the domain name of our
external web-site hosted by our ISP!!    doh!

Now, I have read the posts about adding a DNS forward lookup for "www"
to the IP address of the web-site but this has been to no avail.

The web-site is www.besafe.co.uk and the IP of the web-site is
217.199.170.223 as far as I can tell.

I would REALLY appreciate any help you guys/girls can offer.

PS  adding a "www" host in the forward lookup zone of DNS for the ip
address of the hosted web-site doesn't work, although I can ping
www.besafe.co.uk & i can ping 217.199.170.223 from the SBS server but
not from a workstation.

Kind regards,

Chris

What OS are the workstations running ?
It sounds like your workstations are not using your
server's DNS.

Hi Rick,

All workstations running XP Prof.

Have manually entered the DNS of the server on them as 192.168.16.2
with the IP being assigned automatically.

Looking at the DNS server properties on the "Interfaces" tab it does
show "Listen on: Only the following IP adresses, 192.168.16.2"

Chris

Chris,

Do you have your DNS Forwarders set to point to your External DNS Servers?
I would assume this but just want to check.  Are you running ISA Server?
Are the clients running the Firewall Client?  This could be related to an
ISA issue.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply.

I am using ISA server, and the workstations are using the firewall
client.

In the Forward lookup zones of the DNS server I have the following;

(same as parent folder) Start of Authority   [144],
besafe02.besafe.co.uk., admin.
(same as parent folder) Name Server  besafe02.besafe.co.uk.
(same as parent folder) Host  192.168.16.2   (IP address of NIC
connected to LAN)
(same as parent folder) Host  217.37.43.241  (IP address of NIC
connected to internet)
www   Host   217.199.170.223   (IP address of external server hosting
the web-site).

I'm not sure what you mean about "Do you have your DNS Forwarders set
to point to your External DNS Servers?",  I just ran the ICW.

Many, many thanks

Chris

Open DNS and right click on your server name. Click on the forwarders
tab to see what the ICW did for you. I had to do the www at an account
the other day. From the command prompt I typed ipconfig/flushdns and
then ipconfig/renewdns? I don't recall the second command but it is
not important. The first command is so that the old dud www references
in the dns cache are deleted.

Hi,  still no joy.   But, our ISP is changing the servers hosting our
web-site on Friday.  I'll change the settings then report back on
Monday.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi all,

Got the new IP for our web-site.   Changed the www host in our DNS to
point to this IP, now when I try to connect to our web-site I receive
a request for a username and password titled "Connecting to
besafe.co.uk".

I still can't fathom this problem,  can anyone please help?

Thanks,
Chris

SORTED!!!

Found out that the ISP was hosting our site as http://besafe.co.uk
instead of http://www.besafe.co.uk  Thus the forward lookup host of
www was not working.

Got them to change it and voila!  All is OK.

Thanks to all who contributed.

Regards,
Chris
