Hello All,
I have an SBS2000 set-up with 17 clients and we currently use an ADSL
connection (its actually the cheaper 'home' version) to the Internet via a
Netgear DG814 router (with a single fixed IP address) and download mail via
POP3 using the Popbeamer programme - and all works fine.
I have recently installed a new ADSL line with a faster connection with less
contention and smtp mail. I have been given an IP address by my ISP for the
router and an IP address for the mail server or mailgate. Unfortunately
being a bear of little brain I can't work out what to do with the two IPs. I
can set up the netgear router with the IP address but when I run the ICW it
doesn't ask me for a mail gate IP so how does exchange know what IP to use.
Presumably the ISP will send all smtp mail to the mailgate IP address but
how does it get past the router and do I have to disable NAT in some way.
Its all very complicated!
Hope someone can help.

the external public ip address that is assigned to the
router should be the ip address you gave to the isp to
put into dns as the mx(mail exchanger reocrd)for your
email domain.
then configure the router to port forward the port Smtp
tcp(25) to the internal ip address of the server
ie 21.21.21.21 >>> 192.168.0.1 port 25
then from an external source or email test website, your
should be able to telnet to the server at public address,
port 25, and receive a responce from your server.
this is all you need to do to have you email server
accpet in bound mail for the defined domain. if relaying
has been changed from the default be aware of open relay
issues.(exchange 2000)
