Hi All,

I would like to add another controller to my domain in order to have a
"backup server".  I need to re-install the domain controller and I can't
affor and downtime.  the domain controller has win2k server and exchange 2k.
Can I replicate the data and e-mails onto the backup server?

If yes, could someone please point me in the right direction i.t.o.
articles, papers etc.

Thanks in advance and regards

a DC will replicate AD stuff, not email.

You are not talking about SBS? right? You might want to post this question
in the Exchange and Win2k server NGs.

I don't know much about it... but replicating the actual DATA (docs, files
and so on) seems to be a quite complex project.

lemme run this one by you Javier.

Gianni has an SBS2K server and another 2K box as BDC and runs FRS on some
dirs between them. He can't replicate Exchange because he has only one SBS,
nontrusting and nonconnecting.

SBS goes down.

Gianni's client PC lose internet access and email but retain file access
through the replicated file structure. Will this do?

I'm must admit I'm not familiar at all with File Replication Services... but
you have spiked my curiosity (I have a new installation soon that could
benefit from this). Thanks for the heads up SG !!

Fortunately... I'm leaving this dreadful cold for the sunny/hot Miami in a
couple of hours (so now I have something else to read in the airplane). See
ya' all next week :-)

Cheers,

I didn't see SuperG recommending him replicating Exchange here - just files.
In fact he specifically said that they customer WOULD loose access to the
internet and emails.

I think the phrase 'He can't replicate Exchange' should cover this topic.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for that info.  What I will do is to place another server (dormant
from the user's point of view), and replicate AD stuff.  Data and docs, I
can always xcopy to a directory on server #2 at a specified time, emails I
will, if there is no other choice, synchronize on the user's local PCs.

A normal veritas (yuk) backup will run every night, and more than this I
really dunno...

THanks again and regards to all

If you want that type of failover redundancy then you'll need to look
to -expensive- 3rd part products like the Marathon offering.

Place to start might be:
