Hi All,
I have just upgraded from an old sever running SBS4.5 to a new Dell server
running SBS2000. Got 17 clients, 12 of which are XP. If a printer is
attached to an XP client and set for sharing then other XP clients cant see
it or print to it. The server cant see the printers either. If the printer
is on a W98 client then the printer can be seen by all XP clients and the
server. (On the old SBS4.5 system there was no problem). I have restarted
the server and XP PCs and reinstalled the printers all to no avail.
I am sure its some security/permission thing but don't understand why.
Anyone help?
Thanks, David, UK

Hi David, sounds like a DNS problem...possibly.

How are XPs set up ? Are they in domain and have DNS pointing to SBS,
(ipconfig). Try logging into XPs as domain administrator (at least two, one
with printer) this will test security.

Can you see other XPs in My network places ? If so XP with printer installed
(assuming it is shared...LOL) can you see this over network and if so right
mouse click and ' connect '

Thanks Guys
Got your replies overnight so will try out today
Actually I have one XP home client which works fine on SBS for Internet,
drive mapping and email. (It thinks its in a 'workgroup', Ha!)
Its the same printer problem though!
Before anyone jumps on me, the only reason that I have an XP home client is
that its a Compaq evo pc and I couldn't upgrade to XP Pro because of an
issue with the video card (which I haven't got round to sorting out yet)
Thanks, David

Just interestingly, does it take a long time for the XP
workstations to log on?  Also what site are they listed in
in active directory, and when you ping a workstation what
kind of a reply do you get?

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
I discovered that the server could see the clients but couldn't log on to
any of them so I made a new 'set up floppy' and reinstalled all 17 clients.
Everything is fine now (Phew!)
Regards, David
