Reinstalling SBS 2000

the drive on our server that was running SBS 2000 crashed on us. we
managed to take the backup of it after it failed.

so we made our Backup Domain Controller running Windows 2000 server
Service pack 4 as the PDC.

reinstallation seems to be the way to go at this point.

and reinstalling SBS doesn't seem straight forward.Firstly, I cannot
install Active Directory without being in the domain, it says setup
has detected a duplicate DNS Domain Name on the network(which is
correct becoz the server crashed on an existing domain). it cannot
continue with the setup when joined to the domain as well.

when I join the new computer(on which sbs2000 is being reinstalled) to
the existing domain, ADMT does not work ..it says i need to transfers
users & computers using  different domains.

any clues on this would be great.

thank you.

at this point, you should probably contact Jeff Middleton at sbsmigration.com about doing a "swing migration"

to the best of my knowledge, there weren't any papers or recommendations about introducing a SBS 2000 server into an existing AD, although there is a paper on doing that for SBS 2003.   The theory should pretty much be the same.

Thinking out loud here...

SG posted a reply to a similar situation a few years back...

-----------------
Use one of your 'vanilla' W2K install CDs to add the new machine as a DC into your existing domain/forest. Transfer the AD FSMO roles to it and make it a GC, then upgrade it to SBS.
-----------------

As long you used the same server name as the original SBS 2000, I believe you could then restore your backup to the (in-placed upgraded) SBS server.

I can run but I can't hide :-)

May need some AD 'tidy up' . (Jeff's notes/tools could be useful)

Better idea would be to recover the existing installation from backup (LFN
issues and all) taken before the error.
Bog standard 'Disaster Recovery'.

But the old "BDC" has been promoted to the "PDC".  Wouldn't that complicate
a standard 'disaster recovery'?

yes

Maybe I should have said:
Better idea would have been to recover the existing... before the 2nd DC was
made primary (OH NO, we don't have them! do we?).

Wondering whether recovering the original and then rolling back the 2nd to
'pre-error state' would be quicker, not sure.

Easier is probably the 2 stage re-install.

thanks for your replies.

apparently you cannot install sbs while on an existing domain. I had
to do an install of SBS on a separate network.

used the ldifde tool to export users from the existing PDC and
imported it back using a thumb drive.
ldifde retains the structure of AD(more or less), blanks the password,
disables user accts, does not retain permissions...but it works.

now am in the process of restoring Exchange 2000.

I have already installed Exchange 2000 on sbs(which is on a separate
network) ...but I read somewhere that it has to be installed in
disaster recovery mode. is that true? if so, I can go ahead reinstall
it again.

how do i create DFS links?

thanks for your help.

sorry about the question on DFS links..it was in the admin tools menu.

now I reinstalled sbs 2000. am in the process of trying to recover
Exchange...copying the .edb and .stm files have taken up the last 3
hours...and itz not done yet.

ok..now when it does get done...do I run setup /disasterrecovery(i
have already installed Exchange 2000 but not in disasterrecovery mode)
or eseutil /c?

any help will be great

thanks.
