POP3 and telnet NOT working from workstation clients running XP

Hi, installed the latest batch of updates on XP workstations. I get the
following message trying to get pop3 emails.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'account name', Server:'server', Protocol: POP3, Port
110, Secure (SSL); No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

This is from Outlook and Outlook Express. In this case I'm not using
Exchange but setting up a separate pop3 account in Outlook on the workstation.

If I try to "Telnet pop.compuserve.com 110" I can't get a connection on the
Workstation, but it works fine on the SBS2000 server. I've tried disabling
the firewall, ISA packet filters, creating new outlook email accounts etc.

The only way I can get the client to work is to connect the workstation
directly to the broadband router, then it works fine, so it must be something
to do with the SBS2000 configuration, but I'm stumped on this one.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Anything in the event logs on the SBS server or the workstation?

Is this the only workstation with the problem?

If another user logs into the workstation, does he also experience the
problem?

When the problem occurs, can the user access shares on the server?

Hi Merv, its sorted now, but no there was nothing in any of the logs to
indicate a problem, and access to the server was working fine.

The issue started after installing the last batch critical updates from
Microsoft.

The fix, I found was to uninstall the Firewall Client, reboot, Re-install
the Firewall Client, after which everything was working fine, no idea why
though.

Very odd, looks to me as if the last batch of updates somehow scrambled the
firewall client. Have to look out and see if anyone else has the same issue.

If you google the error message 0x800CCC0F you can see lots of people with
similar problems and there seems to be no single fix, what works for one
person doesn't work for others.

Thanks for your comments.
