Richard Rees - 15 Oct 2004 04:04 GMT Brand New PE2850 with 3 x 140Gb drives configured in RAID5 array.
Can't install from Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD as it don't support SBS, only Server 2003.... so, install by booting to SBSCD1, hit F6 to load SCSI driver, whack in driver Floppy that I've created from Server Assist CD and select correct drivers.
Windows tells me it's got similar drivers, but I hit S to use the Dell drivers.
Setup continues, select partition etc. After copying some files, it then prompts me to insert the RAID driver Floppy, and hit Enter which I do, but it fails to accept the Driver, and loops at "Insert Floppy and Press enter!"
F3 to exit.
Have tried alternate drivers (on various floppies) from the web - No change Have tried to use the Windows PERC drivers - Install goes through, until reboot, and then as soon as Windows 2003 graphic displays on startup, system reboots & loops at this point OR install will go through GUI component, configure local settings etc. then blue screen on startup...
Have booted to floppy, FDISK and Format, copy cabs to Hard Disk and run winnt for DOS install, no difference.
HAS to be RAID driver problem... but 2850 is alledgedly compatible with SBS??
Has anyone managed to do this?
Does anyone have a Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD that supports SBS? Does anyone have PERC 4e/Di drivers that support SBS?
Aaaarrrgh.
Dell suggests disabling RAID and installing as pure SCSI drives... I'm sure this might work, but fairly disappointing outcome....
Thanks for any ideas.
Rich.

Different versions of Dell drivers can be a PITA. Their #1 suggestion is usually to make absolutely sure that the driver version matches the firmware version. You get all sorts of funky behaviour if they're not the same. And your description fits that scenario.

That's very odd. I've used the Dell CDs to install SBS2003 several times. What version of the disk do you have?

It's reassuring to note that it IS compatible. I'll check firmware.
The Version of Server Assistant I have is 8.2.2. I didn't buy OEM Dell SBS CD's as I already had the full retail version.
I've downloaded drivers from Dell, but will check again.
As suggested by the Dell Techo, I disabled RAID in BIOS, and installed as SCSI just to isolate the problem. Sure enough, no problems, complete install.
Once installed, I checked out the drivers which were supposedly for the 4e/Di by using Windows update driver interface in Device Manger. By choosing to update the drivers of some device, selecting "Have Disk", and browsing to the extracted Dell driver files, the 4e/Di didn't show up in the list of available drivers. 4 other PERC devices showed up, but not the 4e/Di.
Is that most likely my problem?
Glad I don't need this box up and running in any particular hurry!!

Then again, I don't always use the Dell CDs to do any installs - sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Depends how lazy I'm feeling. You don't need to use it if you don't want...configure the RAID using CTRL+M at boot time & run the install manually....

Well guys, I guess this is the only thing it could have been. Dell released a BIOS update 6 weeks ago, so I updated BIOS from A00 to A01, and although there was no mention of this bug in the update notes from Dell, it may have done the trick.
Straight up clean install... 4 days of 'free' time wasted, but I think we're there.
Thanks again for your help guys.

first i tried to make my usb-stick run as a floppy. the sbs-setup runs from the autostart-cd. when the cd start i press f6 to get the driver from the floppy a (usb-stick). because the two kind of driver (w2k and w2k3) where offert i suggested the the usb-stick works as a floppy?! then, when the setup goes on, it ask again for the disk and runs in a loop.
i think the problem was the usb-stick and i buyed a usb-floppy. -> the same reaction.
now i will try to build a new setup-cd with the newer raid-driver build in the driver.cab. (does someone know a programm to insert a file in the cab-file? zip only can read cab-files but does not write into them)

A common aproach to replacing the windows default driver is to: 1. Boot with Win98 floppy or similar 2. FDisk and Format hard disks/array as FAT32 3. Re-Boot to SBS install CD1 4. Install LEAVING PARTITION AS FAT 32. Accept windows default drivers 5. After files are copied, it will ask you to remove Floppies etc. and reboot but here we change courses. 6. Reboot to Win98 floppy, then using your Dell SCSI driver Floppy, copy the MRAID35X.SYS file to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers directory (overwriting the Windows driver) 7. Remove the floppy and reboot, setup continues.
NORMALLY this will fix the drama AFAIK but it DID NOT in my case.
I'm chasing up another theory here... are any of the files on your USB floppy marked as read only???

I had an afterthought. This may be dumb, BUT, I didn't have a handy PC running Windows with a CD-ROM and a Floppy (my SX280 doesn't have a floppy, and the Virgin PowerEdge 2850 had no OS installed). Soooo I couldn't create driver floppies using the Self-Extracting archives included on the DELL CD's... that can only be done in windows.
So, being lateral, I extracted the contents of the driver floppy to my PC, then burnt them to a CD. Whacked the CD into the PowerEdge, boot it to DOS using a floppy, then copied the Drivers to a floppy.
Whilst this put all the files onto the floppy no drama, I'm thinking MAYBE the Read Only attributes of the files from CD-Rom carried over to floppy? I can't check it as I no longer have the floppy, but is that plausible?
That would mean all the Drivers would have been marked read only...?
Could be bullshit, but I'm just wracking my brains here to recall ANYTHING unusual I did. Pretty much documented everything I did... anyway, just a thought.
Rich.

When I put the same CD in an XP PC and do a DIR from a DOS prompt, it shows as $OEM$. What am I missing here... Am I really this stupid?
