We recently had a situation where our exchange server was running fine, all
services appeared normal, but a weird software conflict was kept hanging the
smtp servcie.  No errors were generated and it never actually stopped, it
just didn't function right.

Does anyone know of a way to determine automatically whether incoming mail
is being recieved, other than the obvious realizing you're not getting mail
from the outside world.
