IIS Manager sees remote UNC but a browser can't

IIS 6
W2K3

I have an interesting problem.  I'm trying to setup a simple virtual
directory that points to a remote share.  When I create the new virtual
directory I choose the "A share located on another computer" option and
input the UNC path in the "Network Directory:" box.  I then click on
"Connect As..." and input the proper user and password so that IIS can
properly authenticate to the remote computer.  I click OK and in IIS
manager I can double click on the virtual directory I just created and I
see the list of files on the remote computer.  So it seems like
everything works great.  However, when I go to a web browser and try to
access the virtual directory I get a 500 internal server error.

I thought that maybe this was an authentication issue, but since IIS
manager can see the files in the share, I'm not sure it is.

Anyone have any idea why IIS manager can see the files in the remote
share, but returns a 500 internal server error if I try to access the
virtual directory with a browser?

Thanks for any help!

Depends on authentication protocol you configured...

Web Browser = remote client/server != IIS MMC Manager

See the following URL for how to correctly configure what you need:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/technologies/weba
pp/iis/remstorg.mspx

I had found that document and read through it and somehow missed the
group environment configuration section.  Thanks for the link to check
it again.  I just had to make sure I had identical usernames and
passwords on the IIS server and the file server.  Thanks again.

=)
