Outlook and DirectPush

Does anyone have any idea why Outlook must remain open on my
workstation in order to receive email via DirectPush from Exchange
Server, and is there a solution? I'm on WM 6.0 and ActiveSync 4.5. If
I leave the office and Outlook is not running I get no email. We just
recently began using remote sync with 2 HTC PPC6800's and they both
have the same issue. We're running Exchange Server 2003 w. SP2. I'm
guessing something needs tweaked on the server but I can't find
anything to tweak. As long as Outlook is up and running on the
workstations everything works fine.

Thanks
Bob

Does this work properly for anyone else?

To me, it sounds like your device isn't configured properly to handle direct
push, because it shouldn't require that you have a PC at all, let alone have
one logged in all the time. You don't even need to install ActiveSync on the
desktops.

On the handhelds, go to Activesync, and configure it to connect to your
Exchange server. If you have a trusted 3rd party SSL cert, that's all you
should need. If you have a self-signed one, you will need to export it &
install it on the devices. I would recommend buying a cheapo 3rd party cert
such as that from GoDaddy so you never have to worry about that bit.

I have already done all that you suggest including the trusted SSL
cert. Someone here local suggested I try running Outlook without the
default cached mode. Is there any logic as to why that would make a
difference?

Nope. Outlook has nothing to do with this, honest. I'd do a hard reset on
the device and try again.

Is *anyone* able to use EAS in your environment? Sure your server/network is
set up properly?

Yes EAS works for everyone using it, as long as they leave Outlook
open. Just for kicks, I tried taking Outlook out of cache mode and
then logging off. Surprisingly DirectPush now seems to still be
working, even with my worstation logged off, contrary to what was
happening before. Hopefully this has resolved the issue.

I meant, is this working as it's supposed to (without Outlook being open!)
for anyone.

Yes, indeed. If it does, re-enable cached mode and try again.
