Hi Everyone,

My company is planning for an NT to AD migration that includes an Exchange
5.5 to Exchange 2003 migration.

At this point we are not sure if we will be performing an in place upgrade
of the domain or migrating to a new AD domain.  If we do the migration to a
new AD domain, can the new Exchange 2003 server (in the new AD domain) be a
part of the existing Exchange 5.5 site?  In the end we want to be able to
move the mailboxes from one server to the other.  Is there another way to
pull this off?

More info on this - we are the last NT4\Exchange 5.5 domain running in the
organization.  The Exchange Org is running in 2000 mixed mode and there is a
"phantom" Admininstrative Group in Exchange 2000 Systems Manager that
represents our Exchange 5.5 site.

Yes. This happens by default. When performing an inter org migration
from NT\5.5 to AD\EX2003, you create your new pristine forest. Install
Exchange in this new forest, but install your new EX2003 in the same
Exchange org as your 5.5. You will be able to move boxes from your 5.5
to your new EX2003 server.

Thanks James for replying to my questions.

Would it make any difference at all to your answer if in this situation we
were not createing a new AD forest and that one already existed?  The
Exchange org presently overlays the existing AD forest and our NT4 domain.
We plan to migrate to the existing AD forest as a sub-domain.

Does your answer still apply for the sub-domain?

Yes no problem, still applies. Just make sure when you install Exchange
it's joining the same Exchange org.
