Exchange 2007 -  Client Access Server Role

Hello,

I have a design question about Exchange 2007, especially about the Client
Access Server Role. I would like 2 Exchange 2007 servers in one active
directory site with following roles on each server. Mailbox Server, Hub
Transport Server and Client Access Server. The mailbox roles are no issue,
That's a no brainer. Multiple Hub Transport Servers shouldn't be an issue a
redundancy for this role is taken care of by design in Active directory (if
I interpret the documenation correctly). My main concern is with the 2
Client Access ServerS in the same AD site. I do not want the mail servers to
dependant on the other for any services. Is this a possible configuration?
We do not want to use NLB for that role, but if possible we would like very
mail server to be fully functional even when the other is down.

Thx for you input!

The Mailbox server role is independent of CAS and will remain completely
functional including MAPI client access.
If the CAS goes down, only client access using OWA, RPC over HTTP,
ActiveSync, IMAP4, POP3, et al is impacted.
Mailflow will continue as long as you have at least one Hub (besides your
Mailbox server) up.

After reading your question again I realized I misunderstood it the first
time.

If you have Mailbox, CAS and Hub Transport roles on 2 servers and one of
them goes down, the server that's up should be completely self-sufficient -
it will not be impacted by the other one going down except for messages for
mailboxes on that server will be queued up.
