Hello,
Here is my situation:
I have a DC running w2k and exchange 2003.  I am going to rebuild this
box with 2003 and leave as a member server, it is currently having a
lot of issues that need to be addressed.
It is a rather small organization, probably 36 mailboxes or so.  I have
thought of 2 ways to do this and am wondering if anyone had any
experience or advice on which way to go about this.  Keep in mind this
is the only exchange server in the org.

1. Uninstall Exchange
2. Demote the DC
3. Rebuild and restore exchange from backup tapes.

--or--

1. Move exchange to another server temporarily, following MS KB 822931
2. Uninstall from first server
3. demote DC
4. rebuild with 2003
5. Follow the article again to move exchange back to the server, now a
memebr server running 2003.

Any suggestions?? Thanks
Craig

I would go with the latter (swing) approach. However, if the existing server
is the only GC/DC in your environment besides being an Exchange server,
you'll need to make the temporary server a GC/DC as well.

Yes, I think I am going that route. It seems to be a better documented
procedure.

Well, at the time I move Exchange, there will be another DC on the
network but not the temporary exchange box, that is just a member
server.  Are you saying that the temporary exchange server I build has
to be a DC?  One of the reasons I want to do this is to separate the DC
responsibilities from Exchange.  Maybe you just meant that there has to
be "A" DC on the network. Thank You

Craig
