I am thinking of using an external hard drive to backup my company's data.
Its about 40gigabytes worth of data to be back up.
the hard drive will backup the data once a week then be taken offsite for
storage.

I call dell and ask for a tape backup device, and they quote me for 2000
dollars.
A little too expensive in my opinion.

But is my idea for storage on a removable external hard drive, a legitimate
option or am I asking for trouble?

Both...It is a legitimage option (I use it for my laptop and home PC)...and
it is also asking for trouble.  I can get 15 gig in less than 20 minutes.
However, my data does not change much on a daily basis...and it is not
mission critical.

Look @ Gartners research regarding lack of backups.  Honestly, even a weeks
worth of work lost data can do some damage to a company.

Then again, getting that call from the CEO wanting an e-mail he deleted a
month ago (if you set deleted items retention to 30 days, you are
lucky)...if not, you can't get back the backups from 30 days ago, right?
You have already overwritten it.

Yes, 2G on a drive is expensive.  Yes, $60 for 200/100 tapes are expensive.

Let the executives turn down the $2G purchase...and keep a printed copy of
it.

Ask:  What is my company's data worth.
