Hello,

Exhange 5.5 server in a W2K forest (Exchange server OS = W2K server)
Single Exchange 5.5 Organization (many sites and servers)
W2K Forest in Native Mode

New 2003 Forest running in Native mode.
New Exchange 2003 servers
two way trust between W2K3 and W2K Forests

Design Goal:
Only mailboxes will be in the new W2K3 forest, user accounts will still be
in the old W2K forest.
Single logon.

Is the above possible?

It is and it would be called an Exchange resource forest design.

There could be some issues depending on the client type with authentication,
but should be workable.

Are you having problems with it or just in the design phase?

Al,

Many thanks, Yes we are in the design phase. All clients are W2K
workstation, running Outlook 2000.
Heres another issue.
We have 2 core sites and 14 regional offices. The plan is that the regional
offices connect over the WAN to the two core sites (a new centralized
Exchnage 2003 topology). but if this does not work out and we have to put
Exchnage 2003 servers at each regional site would these servers now also need
a new Exchange 2003 Resource Forest Global Catalogue server? (one GC\DC
server at each office) or can they use the Accounts forest DC\GC servers that
are already at each on office\site?

What are these Authentication issues you mention?

A great design, if the topology can handle it, would be to allow the
Exchange server to be more or less self-contained.  By that, I mean that you
would place the Exchange servers and resource forest DCs in the same central
site.

If you de-centralize the Exchange forest, you'll very much want to put GC's
for that forest in the same site as the Exchange server because Exchange
heavily relies on the GC's. In fact, two minimum is often a best practice
for each site and more if needed. That's for server usage but the clients
would as well.

As a consultant, I would be remiss if I didn't suggest that you find a
consultant to help you out during the desing phase at least.  If you're also
a Microsoft PSS customer, you may want to consider a supportability review
after plan formulation to verify the design and maybe fine-tune it.  Can be
extremely helpful.

Drop a note off-line if I can be of further help and if you haven't already,
have a look at the design and deployment docs at
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/library as well as the multi-forest
considerations documents also located on Microsoft's web site (I prefer a
google search like this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=multi-forest+considerations+site%3Amicrosoft.com )

Al,

I have tried your MS profile email, but get a DNS bounce.
My email is mark.burse@srg.caa.co.uk

I have another question that I would like your thoughts on. If you have the
time.

The new Exchange 2003 Resource Forest requires a user account with SID
history from the W2K root forest (disabled account I have read), how are
these accounts then created in the new Exchange 2003 Forest? using ADMT? or
other migration tools Quest etc
When the accounts are then created in the new Exchange 2003 forest, can the
ADC be then installed between the 5.5 organisation in the Root W2K forest and
the new Exchange 2003 forest?.
Will the ADC work across forests?
We do not want to create a new Exchange organization.

Many thanks
