Decomission Exchange 03 environment

Hi,

I have read a few articles about decomissioning your last Exchange Server.
Most of these articles only speak about a single Server (ex03 and EX07)
environment. I have intergrated EX07 into my existing 03 org and have begun
the mailbox migration etc. I have enabled PF replication and have read about
moving the OAB, public folder RUS etc. My existing 03 environment has a Front
end OWA, a backend mailbox 03 cluster and another Exchange 03 mailbox Server
for another site (no cluster). Which Server should I be uninstalling first.
Is there a reason why Exchange 2003 has to be uninstalled. why cant I just
unplug them from the network and leave them at that?

Thanks

Elvis

You should have deployed the CAS role first pointed all the OWA users here
and then started by uninstalling the FE first.

Hi,

Actually it doesn't matter which server you decommission first - just
uninstall the servers when they are no longer used (after a period of having
all exchange services stopped).

You should uninstall in order to have the servers properly removed from the
exchange organization. If you don't uninstall you would still be able to see
the servers, connectors etc in active directory.

Hi,

Thanks for the advise. I did install the CAS/HT role first and have
redirected my OWA. my 03 front end is also my bridgehead Server so all
traffic is currently flowing to and from this 03 front end Server. As
explained in the removal docs they advise to remove the Exchange 03
connectors by deleting them from ESM 03. Does anything else need to be done
in order to ensure traffic is flowed to and from my HT Server besides
adjusting my firewall? do I need to run set-routinggroupconnector and specify
the HT?

Thanks

Hi,

If you remove the smtp connector from the 2003 server and you have a send
connector the mail flow should use this send connector (you could start by
increasing the cost on the 2003 connector and lower the cost on the send
connector).

Hi Leif,

Thanks for the response. When I installed the first CAS/HT role it
automatically made a send connector and populated it with all required
details, however under the properties it lists the old OWA front end Server
as the source. Can I remove this? What is its purpose.

Thanks

It's better to change the address space on the Exchange 2003 SMTP Connector
from * to something unroutable like clownpenis.fart, at least temporarily
until you confirm that the change is working properly, because the cost
isn't a real reliable routing determinant.  When you're confident that all
outbound mail is going out, then you can simply remove the SMTP Connector.
If you're having trouble, just change the address space back to *.
