I have two front-end Exchange 2003 servers (FE1 and FE2) that are configured
for sending out smtp mail, but only FE1 is being utilized for this purpose.
All the backend servers are prevented from sending out on port 25.
I inherited a slightly misconfigured Exchange 2003 environment and I am
trying to fix it.
Under 'Routing Groups' in ESM there is one routing group and several SMTP
connectors, one for each server it appears. Each SMTP connector has itself
configured as a 'Local Bridgehead' and are set to 'Forward all mail through
this connector to the following smart hosts', the smart host being 'FE1'.
How can I fix this so that mail will go out automatically through either
frontend server without using smarthosts?
It was suggested to me to use Network Load Balancing then use the shared IP
address as the smarthost, but this doesn't seem like the right solution.
Any suggestions on my routing issues would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I think that you may solve by creating a single connector (Address Space
"*")
Set as "Local Bridgeaheads" FE1 and FE2 SMTP Virtual servers
If remote delivery must be performed directly by the FE servers then use
"Use DNS to route each address space on this connector" otherwise set the
appropriate smart host.
