We are currently running Exchange 2003 SP2 with 5 BE servers and 2 FE
servers.  They are physically split between 2 datacenters in Dallas but are 1
organization and connected by a GigaMAN circuit.  We currently have approx
3400 users and 6500 mailboxes.

I am not particularly interested in creating a cluster, but if you can show
me how it can be done in such a way as to allow me to run Exchange database
maintenance without an outage to the users, I would like to hear about it.

On the Exchange 2003 platform, stretching a cluster across the WAN is going
to be a challenging proposition involving 3rd party replication and failover
products.  If you don't intend to go Exchange 2007, then you'd probably be
better off looking at solutions like Veritas Cluster Server.  If you do
intend to go Exchange 2007, with the bandwith you have it shouldn't be too
hard to stretch a CCR cluster across the WAN.

Without some sort of clustering technology, you are going to affect
your end users during  maint to the servers.

Even with clustering, there is a small window during fail-over.

Outlook in cache mode goes a long way to mitigate this.

Thanks Andy & John

In addition to Outlook in cache mode could the Recovery Storage Group be
used as well? Thx

Why can't you get a maintenance window?
