Exchange backup test on Exchange 2003 on Windows 2000

I am trying to test restore of a test exchange box so I am familiar with the
procedure. I am following the instructions on Microsoft's site using
NTbackup. I did this procedure twice after class as a test but haven't
performed it since.

I have 3 storage groups each with a mailbox store. I created a mailbox in
one of the storage groups and have sent test messages to it. I have performed
a backup using NTbackup on the mailbox store itself. I logged back on and
deleted the messages. I dismounted the mailbox store, renamed the .edb and
.stm files. I then performed a restore of the files .edb and .stm. The store
mounts successfully. However, nothing has changed regarding my mailbox.I
would have assumed my messages would be there.

Noticed that the backup log showed that I only backed up 3 files when there
are 8 files in the folder.

What am I missing? It appears I was not able to get a good backup or restore.

Hi,

Your mail won't be there if you don't also remove the transaction log files.
When you restore the database only and then apply all the transactions from
these log files (this is run automatically) the mail deletion will be there
and therefore the mail will be deleted.-
