Can someone please help me. I am experiencing a problem on a Windows
2000(sp4) Server with Exchange 2000(sp3). When I try to add someone
to the Client Permissions list on ANY public folder I get the
following message: "An unkown error has occurred. ID NO: 80040605
Exchange System Manager"
Can anyone please help me to resolve this problem. I have reapplied
service pack 4 to Windows and have reapplied service pack 3 to
exchange with no luck as of yet.
Thanks in advance!!
Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
According to
246076 XCCC: MAPI Error Codes Encountered in Exchange 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246076
80040605 is CdoE_NOT_INITIALIZED
Possibly there is a problem with CDO on the machine. Make sure you are not
scanning the M: drive with file-level AV scanner(s). What changed recently?
New Service pack, hotfix, application installed?
Can you change the permissions from Outlook?

Hello,
I did come accross that article by Microsoft. I do not know how to
fix this however. I would guess that there is a problem with the CDO
however how does one go about fixing that?
The M: drive has been excluded from the virus scanner. As far as new
software or new updates, I believe this to be an existing problem for
some time that has just now come to be noticed. It has been some time
since anyone has visited the Client Permissions option.
Other information that may or may not pertain to this is that there
are two services that will not run. One is the NNTPSVC Virtual Server
from within IIS ( I think ) which I have also seen within Exchange I
do believe. Also, the System Log Service will not start however
System Logs are generated. One such error that shows up in the system
log is "Source: Schannel, Event ID: 36871, A fatal error occurred
while creating an SSL server credential.".
I can not find where to adjust permissions within Outlook 2002.
Thanks again for your help and sorry about the long post.

Hi,
If you are an owner of a public folder you do have a permissions tab when
you get the properties of the folder. On this tab you can set the desired
permissions.
I believe that the CDO should be repaired by reapplying windows and exchange
service packs.
The mentioned error message from the application log is normal. This is
logged after restart of the SMTP service when the first message is
received/sent.
Any events logged when trying to start the NNTP service?

I am able to add clients from Outlook on folder that the user is an
owner of. This can not be done from Exchange using the Exchange
System Manager as the error then occurrs. The ultimate goal is to
make someone have full access to all Exchange public folders.
I have reapplied service pack 4 for Windows 2000 Server and have
reapplied service pack 1 for Exchange 2000 and this did not fix the
problem.
I do get events logged when I try to start the NNTP service.
"Virtual server 1 cannot open the existing
c:\inetpub\nntpfile\history.hsh hash file or cannot create a new one.
This file is required for the server to operate. Rebuild this virtual
server to resolve the problem. Error description: Unable to complete
the requested operation because of either a catastrophic media failure
or a data structure corruption on the disk."
and
"The Microsoft NNTP Service 5.00.0984 Version: 5.0.2195.6972 Virtual
server 1 has been stopped. "
Also, from within Internet Service Manager, under Default Website,
Public, Exchange, and Exadmin all have errors (indicated by a stop
sign as an icon). This may well have something to do with my problem
as well.
Any thoughts on what to try next??

Hi,
Don't worry about the IIS errors - see
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=259373
For the permissions problem you might want to have a look at
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/PSS/Tools/Exchange%20Support%20Tools/PFDavAdmin/

That tool was an interesting peice of software however it did not
repair the problem. I have just learned that the server is possibly
going to be replaced in which case there is no point in any further
time investment.
Thank you for all of your time and help that you have devoted.
