hi,
I wanted a selution that will give me a quick recovery for a case of
disaster in my only ex2k .
My only ex2k in NOT a DC.
I need to know if this selution will work:
1. I will install a second ex2k server in the same org and admin group .
This ex2k server will be with NO mailboxes. After I will finish to configure
the server (sp, hotfix etc.)  Now I will disconect the new ex2k from the
network.
2. When the original server will crash , I will first put the new ex2k
server online and change his computer name and ip addresss to the same as
the original server.
3. I will restore the new ex2k server from the backup of the original ex2k
server.
A. It will work ????
B. Do I need a ex2k and win2k licence for the new server ??? (becuase always
ther will be just one server online and the other one is like a lab testing
server ) .

thanks.

Hi,

This will not work as you can't rename an Exchange server.

You can however do like this:

1.) Install a standby windows 2000 server with the same service packs and
hotfixes as existing exchange server.

If disaster strikes:

1.) Rename the standby server and configure with the same IP address as dead
exchange server.
2.) Install exchange 2000 with the /disasterrecovery switch
3.) Install all exchange service packs and hotfixes as dead exchange server
4.) Restore exchange databases.

Gil,

Look at NSI Doubtake (www.nsisoftware.com) or Neverfail group
(www.neverfailgroup.com)

It's a lot easier and automated than what you are trying to do.
Remember in a recovery situation 70% of recovery time is "Think Time",
according to an article on www.disaster-resource.com .    So, eliminate
as much think time as you can.
