Cannot Access Exchange Mailbox With Outlook 2000

I have a user that cannot access their exchange box with ANY machine running
Outlook 2000.  When I try, I get the infamous error below:

"OUTLOOK.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

I've tried all of the Micro$oft troubleshooting techniques, but the problem
appears to be with the exchange mailbox.  However, OWA and later versions of
Outlook will open the mailbox just fine (I don't have access to earlier
versions).  Can someone please shed some light on this?

I will cross post this to the outlook newsgroup.

If later versions of Outlook can open the users mailbox with no issue then
its most likely a client issue.  Have you tried a detect and repair with
Outlook 2000?

I've tried to repair all of the .pst files that the client uses.  I've also
tried to create a new profile on a separate machine to open the mailbox, but
that didn't work either.  I can connect to other mailboxes on the client's
machine using other profiles.  The mailbox opens fine in Outlook 2003 and in
OWA.  I'm pulling out my hair on this one.

Does this user have a Roaming Profile?  When opening the Mailbox with
Outlook 2000 for this user, check the event Viewer on the machine and
Exchange Server for any related errors.

No, this user doesn't have a roaming profile.  The only error in the event
log is on the client's machine and it is OUTLOOK.exe....yadayada.  Could
there be a view set in Outlook 2003 that would cause Outlook 2000 to throw
the error?

Its possible its his mailbox, the only way to confirm is to recreate the
users mailbox.  It will not take you that long to recreate the users mailbox
and it will answer the question if its Exchange related.

Could you point me in the right direction for recreating a users mailbox?
Will their emails be lost?

Here is the low down:

1.  Export exsiting mailbox to pst file using Import/Export wizard in users
Outlook.

2.  Verify PST is valid by opening it up.

3.  Right click user in ADUC and select Exchange Task then follow wizard to
delete mailbox.

4.  Go to Exchange System Manager and drill down to your Mailbox Store,
right click and select Cleanup Mailbox Store.

5.   Now, the right hand pane under Mailbox Store you will see a Red X on
the mailbox, right click and delete it.

6.  Go back to ADUC, right click user and select Exchange Task follow wizard
to create mailbox.

7.  Go to client machine and setup Outlook 2000 Profile with user in
question.

8.  Import PST file created in Step 1 to users mailbox.

Thanks.  I may end up doing that, but I found a work around.  On the client
machine, I opened a mailbox that the user has privileges to open and then I
opened the problem Mailbox as a second mailbox, and it opened fine.  As it
is now, the user has both mailboxes open, but she is happy with that.

Thanks again...I'm not sure why the mailbox won't open on it's own.

Interesting, have you tried recreating the users Outlook Profile?

Yes, several times, on multiple machines....anything with 2000 won't open
the users mailbox unless another mailbox is opened first.
